Butvar Resin Helps September 11 Memorial Stand the Test of Time

Since September 11, 2001, community members and corporate citizens alike have contributed to the reclamation of New York City and other disaster-stricken regions of the United States.  Likewise, thanks to their Butvar Specials Department and Customer Service team, Solutia will soon play an integral role in commemorating the more than 3,000 lives lost during the attacks.

Art Preservation Services, consultants from New York were contracted to undertake the preservation of the World Trade Center artifacts, contacted Solutia to inquire about Butvar, and its ability to provide adhesion and protection of artifacts in solvent-borne coatings.  The adhesive would be one of a number used to help preserve the Last Column, a steel beam from the World Trade Center that reaches 36 feet in height, four feet in width and two feet deep.  The column, a remnant of the trade center collapse, bears a collection of photos, images and inscriptions created by the rescue workers to commemorate their comrades lost in the line of duty.

Butvar was used to reattach the layers of paint and inscriptions on the 62 ton beam that had detached due to rusting of the column's mill skin.  Through a combined effort of Solutia employees, including Greg Wilson, Tom Strickland, Dan Mason, Deanna Eggleston and Cheryl Wickenhauser, a plan of action was set into motion and a donation of 25 pounds of Butvar B-76 was made to the project.

Solutia team members were invited to view the Last Column preservation project in New York with Steve Weintraub and Fenella France of Art Preservation Services this summer. While viewing the Last Column, they were able to see the preservation in process as the layers of paint were painstakingly reattached to the steel beam.

"I was honored that when Art Preservation Services came to us, we were able to contribute to the cause of building the memorial for the future," said Tom Strickland, Worldwide Butvar Specials Marketing Tech Service.  "Our role in the preservation of the Last Column helps to demonstrate Solutia's commitment to corporate citizenship and creates a legacy that Solutia employees can look to with pride."

Manufactured at the Trenton, Michigan site, Butvar Specials are commonly used in museums across the country to restore historical paintings and fossils in addition to wood coatings, wash primers, ceramic substrates, composites and structural adhesives.
